MANY FACES, ONE JOURNEY 2007 CDC ANNUAL
Wednesday, April 11, 2007 at the Charlotte Marriott Executive Park Hotel SPECIAL
FACES Keynote Speaker:
Tammy Bell, LCSW, MSW, MAC The keynote address for this year’s Luncheon was delivered by Tammy Bell, LCSW, MSW, MAC. An author and international lecturer, Tammy Bell has been working in addiction treatment for 25 years. Her specialty includes treatment of the chronic relapser, psychotherapy with long term sober addicts, and adolescent relapse prevention. She is a regular speaker at conferences throughout the country and has written her own book as well as numerous journal articles for magazines. Tammy is currently the Director of The Relapse Prevention Center, an outpatient program for recovering alcoholics and addicts, in Charlotte, NC. This
year a special award was presented to writers from the Charlotte
Observer for the series of articles about underage drinking.
For one week during the month of October, Substance Abuse Awareness
Month, the Observer published Straight
Talk about Teens and Drinking -
stories of people affected by teen drinking.
The series profiled multiple personal stories that demonstrate the
diverse ways underage drinking can touch our lives.
In addition to the presentation of this special recognition there
will be a display of the articles.
Congratulations to the reporters for their excellent work! MARTHA BEDELL ALEXANDER AWARD Helen Harrill The
Martha Bedell Alexander Award recognizes the contribution of an individual
in North Carolina who exhibits excellence in leadership and service in
advocating for appropriate, accessible and person- and family-centered
substance abuse prevention and treatment services.
This year the Award was presented to Helen Harrill, Assistant
Director for Substance Abuse Prevention Services.
Helen has been a leader in substance abuse prevention in Charlotte -
Mecklenburg for many years. She
has organized and hosted meaningful training that has benefited most every
person involved in the work of prevention.
Our youth, our families, and our community are better because of her
commitment to this cause. JODY KELLERMANN AWARD Reverend
Joseph C. Coulter The
CDC Board
of Directors is very proud to announce that Reverend
Joseph C. Coulter was the recipient of the
Jody
Kellermann Award at our 2007
Annual Awards Luncheon. Reverend
Coulter developed the Employee Assistance Program at Duke Energy in 1976 and
served as the Director of the program until his retirement in 2002.
It became one of the most successful industry programs in the country
in helping employees afflicted with alcoholism or other drug addictions get
into successful recovery. He has
also served on the Board of the Lawyer Assistance Program as well as on the
Board of Directors at the Chemical Dependency Center of
Charlotte-Mecklenburg. In
addition, Reverend Coulter has been an active Episcopalian Minister since
receiving his Master of Divinity Degree from Virginia Theological Seminary
in 1966. Besides his
responsibilities as a minister, he has served as a spiritual advisor and
confidant to thousands of individuals in the recovery community.
He has performed countless weddings, funerals, and other pastoral
services for persons in the recovery community that may not have been
connected to a place of worship or a minister.
Perhaps his greatest contribution to the recovering community is his
warm personal skill in helping individuals to understand
that their ability to experience recovery from alcohol and drug
addiction is based on their spiritual condition and that they can put this
understanding into action in their lives. His
legacy of service to others is the result of humble commitment to bettering
the lives of others by living a life devoted to the principles of recovery.
