Nurse’s Aftercare Treatment Program

The Chemical Dependency Center is proud to offer  specific programming for Impaired Nurse’s. The RN/LPN, following completion of a treatment program that satisfies both the North Carolina Board of Nursing (NCBON) and a comprehensive assessment, is eligible to attend Nurse’s Aftercare Programming at the Chemical Dependency Center (CDC).  The Nurse’s Aftercare Program meets for 90 minutes weekly and requires regular attendance at AA or NA 12 step meetings.  This program strongly encourages the participants to attend the 12 step program offered in the Charlotte community exclusively for nurse's, as their schedule will allow.  This provides the nurse a safe place to discuss sensitive issues which may include diversion of patient medications on their job prior to getting into treatment. The Nurse’s Aftercare program is facilitated by the NP at the CDC. The focus of the program is Recovery Maintenance for  nurses. Topics covered in group include: Identifying and Managing Early Signs of the Relapse Process and other High Risk Situations (especially as they relate to a working nurse),  Survival Skills for the Workplace,  Spirituality & Meditation, as well as the Importance of Self-Care.

Information on Addicted Nurses

The best estimates tell us that 1 in 10 nurses struggle with dependency on alcohol or other drugs.  In the state of N.C. in 2004, over 54 nurses were found to be addicted to a substance. While we might like to believe that nurses “can’t”  become addicted, this is simply not accurate. The NCBON has 2 programs to assist RN’s and LPN’s who suffer from addiction. The NCBON’s Alternative Program for Chemical Dependency is a voluntary alternative to traditional disciplinary action for a nurse who acknowledges  they have a chemical dependency problem and request voluntarily to participate in this program.  The NCBON’s Chemical Dependency Disciplinary Program is for nurses who are chemically dependent, have violated the nurse practice act and have been given the option to participate in this program at the discretion of the NCBON.

A Meeting Place for Self-Help Programs

The CDC is a central gathering place for many of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area’s 12-step fellowships & other self-help recovery groups.  At least one of these groups meets every day of the week at the CDC.

The CDC follows Federal, State and Agency guidelines for the confidentiality of information and client privacy.
